From the time of the Valdreath Empire, bone charms were an alternative to quintessence and gaining popularity due to their self-reliance. They were seen as the ultimate slight against the deities. A source of power that could be made by mortal hands. In consideration with the wrath that befell the Empire and its vast hubris, bone charms are believed to be the dark work of The Outsider; a taint that played a key role in the destruction of the old world. Knowledge of their make was burnt if not lost and, for a time long past, anyone even hinting at learning or making one is seriously reprimanded by followers of the Trinity.
Nowadays bone charms have been mostly forgotten to the known regions of Iendol. However, with the troubling new flow of foul things coming in from the northern region beyond strange items matching these flesh relics have started cropping up. Most are unaware of exactly what they hold, and onlookers are unlikely to immediately recognize a charm for what it is. If they should it could cause quite the adverse reaction.
Bone charms are intricate combinations of flesh and bone from magical creatures and other beasts with particular innate abilities. They come in many shapes and sizes, some as jewelry, some interwoven into garments, all with runes or the emblem of Enaiteyl etched in them. The greater the power of the living creature the more powerful a charm that can be made. Though, there is also a risk of said item being haunted or cursed. The exact rites and rituals only exist in smears of the past and working experiments of the now so what causes these 'bonus' effects isn't truly understood. What is known is the stronger the charm the more likely it is haunted or cursed.
Any normal or cursed effect that a charm grants is immutable. It constantly draws in a source of energy, preferably magic, but when lacking an aura to draw from it resorts to taking from living organisms. And if lacking both magic and life to steal from it will cease to work, cracking and crumbling as it eats itself away in a process that normally only takes an hour for a strong charm. The radius in which a charm draws in energy is approximately twenty feet. If a source of energy returns to its immediate vicinity it will resume typical functionality but at a reduced strength relative to how much of it is left. Additionally, bone charms cannot draw energy from quintessence and an Adhara's quieting touch will destroy charms outright.
The effect that a bone charm grants is typically only for a single bearer or object that it is directly touching. Setting it in a thin pocket, fastening it to a thin glove, or hanging it from a belt is fine, but putting it into a bag or otherwise not having it immediately on your person will not permit you to partake in the boon it grants. The level of power that a charm grants are split between 'Lesser' and 'Greater' charms; none of which are weaponized or grant ranged abilities. Lesser charms are small physical effects whilst Greater charms begin to touch on low level elemental tricks, such as sensing the ethereal, evading perceptions and hiding in plain sight, or minor elemental resistances. Each charm only ever has one effect.
Bone charms are limited (2) Lessers and (1) Greater per character. Currently only obtainable through events [IC or OOC], thread quests, or special permission. This is subject to change as the site progresses.
