The Guilty Lotus
The Petals of Death, Heralds of Fate, Formless Harbingers
◊ Do not speak of the Lotus. ◊ Your morality is your own. ◊ Failure is acceptable. Excuses are not, accept failure and improve. ◊ Do not harm a fellow member, or by inaction allow them to come to harm. ◊ Do not leave traces that lead back to the Lotus.
◊ Marcus Caulfield ◊ Viola Graves ◊ Marcel Ackerman
Origin & Summary
The Guilty Lotus, as a name, was not formed until later, three families were faced with betrayal from their brethren. Once members of a large fighters guild in Serei, the Lotus, they'd been dipping into subterfuge and assassination, at least until the entire guild was given a mission the three families did not believe to be justified. What started as arguments within the ranks became a full-on bloody battle for survival. The three families, the Caulfields, the Graves and the Ackermans, worked together, using trickery and any talents on hand to fight against the rest of their guild until their halls were nothing more than a mess of bodies and pools of crimson.
The remaining family members fled the halls taking along with them only what they could, they carried their families out and escaped Serei, they settled into a new home and built up a new community. They took a long hard look at the events that had occurred and their new rising skills as assassins before they began forming the new group, calling themselves the Guilty Lotus, as a reminder of their misdeeds and the death of their previous guild. They formed new tenants and rules, both obvious and unspoken. Never would they allow the clashing of morals tear them apart.
They set up agents in towns who would leave them information and payment at dead drops of choice, only ever revealing themselves when necessary as they slowly turned murder from a simple job into an artform. As time passed they occasionally welcomed new blood into the fold, picking up strays who didnt know what to do with themselves, giving aid to the needy in return for services and information, expanding their contacts until the Guilty Lotus became a name whispered in hushed voices, the looming shadow that many knew existed but none truly knew how to locate them.
The Guilty Lotus is known for taking any kind of assassination missions, whether it be simple peasants or noblemen, whether the targets are many or few, without discrimination and morality to cloud their mind; their only focus becomes to do the job at hand and never allow the Lotus to be threatened. A council of three keeps ever watchful of their clan, assessing each individual under them to assure they are sending the right one for each job and making sure than no individuals moralitys collide with anothers. Cooperation and Family within their community is absolutely vital.
Beliefs & Practices
The Lotus does not believe there is any wrong way to kill some-one, so long as it is done and the kill is confirmed.
Training methods of the Lotus are extremely varied but thorough. Many individuals are often suited to different forms of combat or assassination. Whilst everyone is taught the basics of combat, of concealment and of misdirection, the favored method for each individual is different and sot hey are encouraged to find their own methods.
If a method can be learned by others, then it is encouraged to share it, to broaden the arsenal of choices available.
The Lotus does not look down on Witches, Zofiens or any other race, anyone who wishes for family and sanctuary can find it within the confines of the Lotus clan.
Any who are found to be actively seeking the Lotus are often assigned a watcher. This watcher follows them, or befriends them. If it is deemed that this seeker is a threat, they are to be eliminated. Otherwise they are brought to the Lotus to be judged by the council personally.
The Council understands that at times a persons morality can be conflicted, their choices are not infallible. They are allowed to plead their case as to why they refuse to do a job and in some cases there is an unwritten rule that the individual may choose any method in order to kill their target.
The moment a target is given to a Lotus, it is their task alone, a second only follows up if the first perishes. If the second also fails, the target is annulled and written off as a danger to the Lotus to pursue.
The first may name their second for a task.
As a polite courtesy to targets that have gained the Lotus' respect, they are sometimes sent a message to let them know that the Lotus has been tasked with their death. If they survive both assassins, they are sent a second message, assuring that the Lotus shall cause them no further grief.
When a contract is made, two contracts are written and signed by both the employer and the agent they have contacted. One is kept by the employer, the second is held by the Lotus for book-keeping purposes, if both contracts are deemed lost or missing. The contract is annulled. The contract does not begin until second copy is safely in the hands of the Lotus.
Garish and crude behavior towards the target and members of the Lotus is not tolerated. Forcing onesself on another is punishable by death.
It is said that leaving a Lotus Flower at the grave of a family member, along with a signed letter to the deceased swearing that you will do right by them will summon a Lotus Agent, who will then approach at a time of their choosing.
There are only ever three Council members, consisting of two elder members and one younger. The idea is that whilst two share experience and knowledge of times past, the youngest member concentrates on the world as it currently is, unofficially, the youngest member is considered the current leader of the entire clan since the elders offer guidance, but a reasonable agreement must come from all three before a major decision is made. Normally the council of three consists of one member of each of the major families. But there have been occasions where two or even three have been of the same family. It has caused no major issues, but it is preferred to keep the leadership spread evenly.
Members of the family who dedicate their lives to teaching younger members, whether it is standard educaiton such as literacy and mathics, or methods of assassination, combat or various other arts. Having a full community of various professions, there can always be found a Mentor to suit the needs of the student.
Members of the family who stay in or near the community when not out on an assignment, a self-policing force almost, they tend to the others, speak with them and protect them. They are always on the lookout for signs of trouble and conflict. They are among the best of the Lotus, but not the absolute best.
When it is suspected that some-one is looking for the Lotus, a Sentinel is turned into a Watcher, they are assigned to locate and observe the individual in question, be it from afar, or by approaching them directly. Their method is their own, if the individual is considered a threat, they are to be eliminated, otherwise they bring them target home.
When a contract is sealed, a Sentinel or another member of the family dons the title of Slayer. At this point they are deemed to be on a contract and will hold no other title until they return. There is a stigma with returning after not completing an assignment, but failure is not looked down on too harshly.
Members of the family who decide to not become Slayers, instead become Artisans, those who perform various standard tasks around the community, be it smithing weapons, construction work, cooking, cleaning. Every position in the family is held in good regard, there are no slaves or servants, only the family and ones contributions to the family. Even Artisans are trained to fight and kill if need be, they are given the tools and the training they need and considered the Gentle Hand of the Lotus that only strikes to protect the family.
Some members of the family pose as agents, the go-betweens that employers talk to. At least two are assigned to each major populace. They look for signs that some-one is looking to hire the family for their work. It is also up to them to judge if any individuals they come across are also looking for their kind of wetwork.
