Said to be gifts from the gods, quintessence are basically condensed magical elements made into a form usable by almost anyone. These stones come in various effects of which mortals can use to boost already inherent abilities beyond normal capabilities; they can even affect inanimate objects. Quints themselves seem to be an endless well of energy, but they do not just give it to their users; they draw energy from the user to remain active. Extensive use of a quint can leave negative side effects in the host. Similarly, a rather powerful quint or combination of many quints active at a time can rapidly drain the user.
Quintessence are crystalline objects of a smokey grey color that occur naturally in the environment. Similar to common gems, quints come in various sizes and are mined out for distribution. They start out inert, or 'locked', however they can be awakened by various means. Exactly how depends on the nature of the quintessence itself. Once a quint is mined they are sent to appraisers who determine their base aspects so that the quint can be properly unlocked and prepared for distribution to the public.
Once awakened, quints gain their coloration. The vibrancy of the color tells of its strength and the tint is how pure it is. It is rare for a quint other than those in the 'Fortitude' category to possess a strong presence of another color. Some combinations can be extremely dangerous, such as a Dire & Light, even used as separate stones. Mixed stones, ones with multiple coloration, are convenient and easier to activate but will always possess the combined affect and cannot be separated. Separate stones can be activated simultaneously to achieve the same effect and could produce a stronger effect but would be more taxing to the user.
Combination effects can vary depending on whether the quint is left 'raw', as in still in a stone state, or if it has been 'set', forged with other material into another form. Quints never seem to be consumed or lost in the forging process, and have so far been able to mix with any material. Note that quints can be forged with other quints to create larger stones and retain the 'raw' properties. Though such a process is incredibly tedious and difficult to accomplish.
Examples...Raw quints are activated by physically touching them, and with a desire to activate them. Set quints are activated by will if the user has physical contact with the item it is forged into. They can remain activated afterward for an indefinite amount of time so long as the initial user remains approximately within ten feet of the main object. While a set quint is activated no other being can turn the quintessence against the initial activator; except for witches. With raw quints, however, the stronger will wins out if there are multiple people in contact with it.◊ Raw: Used as the stone for a ring or mounted on a gauntlet
◊ Set: A breastplate with a light quint inlay
Despite their abundance in the world the power quints possess makes them a rather costly item not well within reach of the poor unless it is flawed or damaged. Forging a quint is a very specialized skill and thus paying for the creation of such a thing would be expensive as would buying an already forged item with a set quint.
